Gill was a well known French caricaturist, and many public figures sought him out to do their comedic portrait. One of the papers he worked for, Le Lune, was banned when Napoleon III took offense to Gill's portrait of him. He spent time in jail for one of his caricatures, and in 1870 became part of the Federation of Artists, a group dedicated to the free and uncensored expansion of art.
